International meeting on Reducing risks to cultural heritage

From 28 to 30 November 2012, 120 people from 37 different countries met at the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (RCE) to participate in an international meeting on Reducing Risks to Cultural Heritage. Twenty years ago the topic would have hardly brought 10 people together!
This event was the last activity of a seven-year cooperation between ICCROM, the Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) and RCE (former ICN) on the development of the risk management approach for cultural heritage.
The RCE team led by Agnes Brokerhof, Bart Ankersmit and Frank Ligterink put together a very dynamic programme around three main topics:
- methods, techniques and tools
- risk management case studies
- values and communication
Talks were short and focused, allowing time for discussion. Of particular interest was the possibility to learn and compare different approaches to risk management in different contexts, to recognize the specific challenges of applying the method to various types of cultural heritage from libraries to sites. The organizers also arranged six workshops on some of the tools developed by the meeting partners.
