To celebrate its foundation 30 years ago the conservation study program of the HAWK in Hildesheim is organizing an international symposium on “Consolidation and Communication” in January 2018: Consolidation is a central task of conservation, namely to safeguard the aged, weakened material structures by appropriate means and methods. The symposium aims to promote an exchange between the different disciplines of conservation: As a way of inspiring new solutions, current research results based on innovative methods should be presented and discussed in view of their transferability to other kinds of cultural heritage objects. Dear friends and colleagues,

The Icelandic section of the Nordic Association of Conservators is pleased to announce the XXI NKF Congress – Cultural heritage facing catastrophe: prevention and recoveries to be held in Reykjavik, Iceland 26 – 28 September 2018.

The theme of the congress is the impact of natural and man-made catastrophes on cultural heritage and recoveries.

During the last few years, the Nordic countries have experienced many disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, building explosion and fires, which have had a serious impact on their cultural heritage as have many other countries around the world. An awakening has taken place in the preventative actions illustrated by the amount of professional documentation on the internet. The congress will be an opportunity to share knowledge and experiences and/to improve the protection of the cultural heritage.

This congress is meant for conservators, curators, and all professionals working with the preservation of cultural heritages.
The program for the XXI NKF Congress will consist of lectures and will be divided into three main topics:

* Preventives measures; Risk assessments and technical solutions
* Case studies of catastrophes and emergency responses
* Long term recovery.

The Sustainability Committee (SC) seeks abstracts for papers to be presented at the upcoming AIC Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas, May 28-June 1, 2018. This year’s theme is “Material Matters.” Submission of original research and work related to the theme are welcome, and any submissions related to sustainable conservation and preservation will be considered.

Topic ideas include:

– How does sustainability affect how you select, use, and dispose of materials?

– How does environmental, social, or economic sustainability affect your practice in a way now that it did not previously?

– What conservation techniques you have tried – with success or failure – to be sustainable?

Authors wishing to be considered for the Sustainability Session must include “Sustainability” among their three choices for Session Preferences.

In this time of entangled social and environmental crisis, the need to not only reimagine but remake the museum has acquired new urgency. In response, this two-day conference will bring together leading scholars and practitioners to investigate the opportunities, challenges, and limits of the museum as a catalyst for social change in this geological epoch of our making: the Anthropocene. From the museum’s early modern origins to the development of today’s highly heritage saturated public culture, the capacity of museums and their objects to perform particular relationships between nature, culture, and history has always been important—inviting critique from a variety of political and theoretical vantage points. The emergence of the Anthropocene as both a contested concept and concrete reality adds new layers of complexity and intensity to this story.
What modes of collecting, classifying, conserving, and curating are called for amidst this moment of unfolding change? How to actively reshape our relations with contemporary ecologies of loss, profusion, and transformation in a way that is both more affirmative and more just? What alternative practices of curation and care flourish in the margins of official heritage projects? How can we differently actualize what Tony Bennett long ago called “the exhibitionary complex” in light of contemporary issues? And finally: Given the museum’s problematic history, can it be salvaged as the vector of its own remediation? Working across a wide range of historical, geographical, and disciplinary contexts, scholars and practitioners will come together in Denmark’s Moesgaard Museum to consider these important questions. Our aim for the conference is not only to critique and deconstruct—important tasks in their own right—but also chart a path forward for the museum as a powerful force for world-making.

The conference organizers invite proposals for papers that address the following or any related themes:
• Hacking the museum: Inspired by the hands-on, experimental approach of the makers movement, we invite papers that chart past cases or future potential with regards to the practical transformation of museum spaces and approaches. In what ways are the institutional, political, and physical boundaries of the museum being punctured and rearticulated in this time of social and ecological upheaval?
• Ontological frictions: How are are the different ontological commitments and epistemic demands of art, science, and history museums being recombined in light of the notion of the Anthropocene? How are the museum’s traditional divisions between nature, culture, human, nonhuman, life, and death being muddled— whether intentionally or not—and with what consequences?
• Curating change: What alternative and experimental curatorial practices are taking shape in response to the entangled social and environmental crises of the present? How do these move through and beyond the museum? And how are contemporary museum imaginaries making space for today’s temporalities of loss, profusion, and transformation within their approaches?
• Contestations: In what ways do museums materialize questions of environmental in/justice and drive forward projects of social change? How does the emergence of the notion of the Anthropocene reflect, refract, or otherwise rechannel these questions and projects?

We welcome papers from across the environmental humanities and beyond.

Preserving, Protecting, Promoting: IFLA launches new guide to its Cultural Heritage work

Libraries play a central role in recording and preserving the life of our communities. From conserving ancient manuscripts to web harvesting, they help guarantee that researchers and citizens tomorrow will be able to understand life today.

This mission is not easy. Effective preservation requires expertise, investment, and a commitment from public authorities. There are numerous risks and threats, from natural disasters to wars, and from physical degradation to technological change that can leave formats such as floppy disks unusable.

IFLA is committed to supporting its members do the best job possible, and in doing so, make a major contribution to safeguarding cultural heritage, a specific target set down established in the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

It works closely with UNESCO and partner organisations to make the case for effective preservation policies internationally for all forms of heritage. It manages the Risk Register, which holds information on unique library collections in order to help ensure their safety in times of disaster. And through dedicated committees and its network of Preservation and Conservation (PAC) centres, it builds contacts and skills around the world.

In order to highlight this work, both to members of the library community and beyond, IFLA has produced a new brochure. This highlights the key areas of IFLA’s work, why it is involved, and explains how to find out more. We encourage you to read and share it!

This event marks the conclusion of the project “Cleaning Modern Oil Paints” (2015-2018), a collaborative European research project exploring some of the most interesting and pertinent challenges associated with the conservation of 20th and 21st century oil paintings. It can be regarded as a follow-up of the Issues in Contemporary Oil Paint symposium, which took place at the Cultural Heritage Agency in Amersfoort, the Netherlands, in 2013.

The focus of the conference will be on the conservation issues of sensitive contemporary oil paint surfaces and the behaviour of oil paints seen from various perspectives. The conference aims to address a wider public of conservators from all fields (e.g. painting, sculpture, paper), researchers, artists, curators, paint manufactures and interested practitioners. A particular focus will be on the practice of conservation and how knowledge is transferred from conservators to researchers and vice versa. Continue reading…

The 2018 AICCM Book, Paper & Photographic Materials Symposium will be held in late November 2018, in Melbourne (likely 20-23 November, at Melbourne Museum, but TBC). This is a first call for papers and other contributions.

There is no overall conference theme, but we’d like to offer themed sessions as part of the conference around the following ideas:

•Revisitation – revisit a treatment, a survey, a research project, a material, an idea, an era. How has it survived the passage of time, and what does that tell us for the future?
•The Anthropocene – this proposed global epoch is defined by the beginning of significant human impact on the Earth’s geology and ecosystems. What does it mean to be a conservator in the Anthropocene? What materials, practices and systems of the Anthropocene are affecting our work and futures? How will we need to adapt?
•Black and white – from either a material or a decision-making perspective, there are bound to be shades of grey…
Contributions could be in any of the following forms:

•Standard presentation (20 minutes)
•Short presentation (10 minutes)
•Panel discussion or debate
•Poster
•Demonstration, slide show, video or model
•Workshop, treatment forum or tour

If you have a different idea for a presentation format, please get in touch – we’d be interested to hear! We’re planning to include a dedicated session for posters and demonstrations, to allow for better browsing and discussion.

Please email your abstract or proposal (no longer than 500 words please) to Bonnie Hearn at ymhearn@gmail.com. Outline the type of contribution (paper, poster etc) and whether it aligns to one of the proposed themes. Make sure to include your contact details, the names of any co-contributors, a one- or two-line bio for each, and a working title.

Note that we intend to provide a hard copy booklet containing the program and abstracts, plus a flash drive containing contributors’ presentation slides or speaking notes, posters etc. We’d like to encourage authors to submit formal written versions of papers to the AICCM Bulletin, post-symposium, and thereby allow contributors to focus on putting together their best presentation possible for the conference.
