Laura AlecrimLaura Alecrim from Brazil will undertake an internship at ICCROM from 2 May to 28 July 2017.

Laura holds a Master s Degree in Urban Development from the Federal University of Pernambuco in Recife, Brazil. She has been working for the last three years at the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional – IPHAN where she has been supervising projects and restoration works on buildings and public spaces. Laura is also a lecturer at the Faculdade Damas da Instrução Cristã – FADIC where is she responsible for teaching urban planning related to intervention on historic centres and architectural design related to residential projects. She has also done an internship at Centro de Estudos Avançados da Conservação Integrada  – CECI.

While at ICCROM, Laura will be working on the Living Heritage programme.

The 6th Course on Conservation of Built Heritage starts

CBH16 posterICCROM is pleased to announce the commencement of the sixth course on Conservation of Built Heritage (CBH16) on 4 March 2016 in Rome.  The course will last until 29 April 2016.

The course has been further improved based on experiences from the last five versions (CBH07, CBH09, CBH10, CBH12 and CBH14). This eight-week course intends to provide a broad understanding of both technical and management aspects of conservation and management of heritage by:

  • improving understanding of critical processes in conservation so as to apply them at the macro and micro levels;
  • improving strategic planning skills relevant to conservation and management of heritage;
  • expanding understanding and awareness of current thinking, principles and practices in the conservation and management of built heritage.

The course is comprised of six modules:

  • Module one – Issues in Heritage Conservation (General Overview), analyzing the development of conservation concepts, evolving nature of the discourse and expanding definitions of heritage;
  • Module two – Management and Planning Context, discussing the management systems, planning for conservation and management of heritage;
  • Module three – Information and Documentation, exploring principles, methods and tools of documentation and information management;
  • Module four – Condition Assessments/Treatments (1), providing different approaches, understanding of materials and the application of science, specifically examining the effects on fabric, surfaces and structures and possible treatments and interventions;
  • Module five – Condition Assessments/Treatments (2), also dealing with condition assessments and treatments at the scale of buildings, sites, archaeological sites and city centres, including various aspects of authenticity and maintenance of the cultural heritage;
  • Module six – Public Access/Interpretation, looking at issues of Interpretation, Presentation, Education and Visitor Management. Continue reading…

Conservation and Use of Southeast Asian Collections

On February 8th the CollAsia course on Conservation and Use of Southeast Asian Collections began in Bandung, Indonesia. The training activity, organized in collaboration with the Bandung Geological Museum and the Geological Agency of Indonesia, Ministry for Energy and Mineral Resources, with the support of the Korean Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA), brought together 34 conservation professionals from 18 countries. They will spend three weeks exploring the challenges of conserving and using collections.

The activity was inaugurated at the Geological Agency Auditorium, with a grand traditional Indonesian ceremony offered by the Geological Agency and presented by the Head of Bandung Geological Museum, Mr Oman Abdurahman, the Vice Minister of Tourism and the Indonesian National Commission for UNESCO. Communication and teaching skills

International Summer School on Communication and Teaching skills in Conservation and Science
13 – 24 July 2015. Rome, Italy

The second edition of the International Summer School on Communication and Teaching skills in Conservation and Science began on 15 July at the ICCROM headquarters in Rome. This two-week training session has brought together professionals from a variety of countries and backgrounds to explore the potential of different didactic approaches, approaches to learning about conservation and science, and revisiting existing practices. CollAsia Course on Handling, Packing and Moving Collections

With over 40 specialists from Asia-Pacific and beyond, the CollAsia international course on Handling, Packing and Moving Collections is taking place 12 – 30 January 2015 in the Natural History Museum, Sarawak Museum Department, Kuching, Malaysia.

Organized by the Sarawak Museum Department and ICCROM, with the support of the Korean Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA), the course aims to improve scientific literacy and critical thinking skills among the diverse professionals caring for Southeast Asian heritage collections.

The course focuses on scientific principles underlying past and present systems for managing museum objects, materials and work practices, as well as the manufacture, use and conservation of collections. Participants are encouraged to share traditional collections conservation practices used in their countries. The course identifies, reviews, discusses and compares living cultural practices and current conservation principles and approaches relevant to the theme of the course. It also encourages further research into developing innovative solutions.

The intensive training activity consists of lectures and interactive sessions, both in the classroom and around Sarawak, with practical exercises. Continue reading…
