| In 2001, ICCROM identified a number of strategic directions for the organization. It was envisaged that ICCROM, in pursuing those strategies in its own work, would also influence the future development of conservation as a whole. The strategic directions were:
- SD1. To have the value of cultural conservation recognized as being of similar importance to, and closely linked with, that of nature or environmental conservation.
- SD2. To promote cultural diversity in all aspects of its policy-making, partnerships and human resources.
- SD3. To maximize impact by reducing project duplication amongst different agencies active in international cultural heritage conservation.
- SD4. To adopt policies and activities that integrate the conservation of movable and immovable cultural property.
- SD5. To promote risk assessment and preventive conservation in strategies for inventory and documentation.
- SD6. To incorporate cultural heritage conservation theory and practice in education curricula at university level.
- SD7. To promote the profession of conservation and education al and didactic material support for it.
- SD8. To co-ordinate and promote interdisciplinary research into heritage conservation.
