ATHAR Programme Core Regional Course on Conservation of Archaeological Sites

Background
The Core Regional Course of ICCROM’s ATHAR Programme (Conservation of Archaeological Heritage in the Arab Region - Syria, Jordan, and Lebanon) aims at establishing and developing professional qualifications in the field of archaeological conservation, and at building the capacity of conservation professionals in the countries of Syria, Jordan and Lebanon. These aims also fall within the framework of UNESCO’s programmes for capacity building in the field of tangible cultural heritage conservation. ATHAR Programme’s primary objectives in the area of “professional development” include: establishing enhanced professional qualifications, whereby a regional network of adequately trained and qualified conservation professionals is created; ensuring that conservation professionals are involved in management and decision-making of conservation projects in the region; and, helping develop appropriate conservation interdisciplinary training at universities and training institutions. This Core Regional Course will be followed by other specialized courses organized by ATHAR Programme.

Course Objectives and Expected Results
By the end of the course, participants will be able to acquire a critical approach to the conservation of archaeological sites by:

  1. Understanding the basic (international) principles of heritage conservation processes in order to devise informed strategies for the conservation of archaeological sites;
  2. Analysing existing physical conditions of archaeological sites, diagnosing causes of deterioration, and assessing legal and institutional contexts;
  3. Recognizing methods for the identification of heritage sites and defining their significance and values;
  4. Identifying priorities for appropriate interventions at an archaeological site.

Course Contents

  • Concepts of documentation and information gathering, recording and heritage information management
  • Processes and causes of deterioration, and methods for condition assessment
  • Introduction to conservation theory and related philosophical and international aspects of protection, with particular reference to the Arab Region
  • Conservation methods of archaeological structures and materials in situ: Preventive and remedial conservation measures
  • Site management, planning, presentation and development: Value-based site management processes, and national legal and institutional frameworks
Course Methodology
The course will consist of interactive, participatory sessions, both theoretical and practical, carried out in a classroom environment and on archaeological sites. Study visits and some applied work at selected archaeological sites in Lebanon will complement work carried out in the classroom. A certificate of attendance will be given to participants who successfully complete course requirements.

Participants
Twenty one heritage professionals from the countries of Lebanon, Syria and Jordan. Applicants can be: Archaeologists, Architects, Structural Engineers, Specialists in Fine Arts, Conservators, Art Historians, Surveyors or Scientists. Their admission to the course will be subject to selection criteria including: a bachelor degree in a relevant field of study and proof of language proficiency (both Arabic and English). Priority is given to government employees or government-affiliated professionals and to those who have already gained practical experience in the field. Candidates are also requested to provide a clear letter stating the reasons for applying to the course, what they hope to learn from it, and how it will benefit them and their institution or future employer. A Selection Panel of partner institutions will make the final selection of qualified applicants.

Teaching Team
ICCROM’s international experts and regional specialists as well as conservation and heritage specialists from the networks of the organizing institutions.

Working languages
Arabic and English. Proficiency in English will be required particularly for research work and reading of reference materials.

Scholarships
With support from the Directorate General for Development Cooperation of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (DGCS), scholarships covering round-trip travel, pre-arranged accommodation and meals in Lebanon during the course, can be made available to selected participants from Syria, Jordan and Lebanon. A request for a scholarship, or the availability of other sources, should be indicated in the application form.

Fee
A registration fee of € 150 (euro) must be paid by the selected participants by 1 October 2005 in order to confirm their participation in the course.
