ATHAR Programme - Core Regional Course on Conservation of Heritage Sites in the Arab Region

Background and aims
The Core Regional Course of ATHAR Programme aims at establishing and developing professional qualifications at building the capacity of conservation professionals in the Arab Region and in the field of archaeological conservation. These have been the main objectives of the ATHAR Programmeand ALECSO programmes (Department of Culture) in the field of cultural heritage. The overall goal of these programmes is to protect and promote the rich cultural heritage in the Arab region, and broaden access, appreciation and understanding of its past.

Course Objectives and Expected Results
By the end of the course, participants will be able to acquire a critical approach to the conservation of archaeological sites by:

  • understanding the basic (international) principles of heritage conservation processes in order to devise informed strategies for the conservation of archaeological sites;
  • documenting and analysing existing physical conditions of archaeological sites, diagnosing causes of deterioration, and assessing legal and institutional contexts;
  • recognizing methods for the identification of heritage sites and defining their significance and values;
  • identifying priorities for appropriate conservation interventions at an archaeological site.

Course Contents
The course will be implemented over a period of five weeks divided into four units:

  • first unit (6 days): conservation theory and related philosophical and international approaches of heritage protection, with particular reference to the Arab Region;
  • second unit (3 days): principles of documentation and information gathering, recording and heritage information management;
  • third unit (11 days): processes and causes of deterioration, and methods for condition assessment; conservation methods of archaeological structures and materials in situ: preventive and remedial conservation measures,
  • fourth unit (4 days): site management, planning, presentation and development: introduction to value-based site management processes, and national legal and institutional frameworks.

The course will consist of interactive, participatory sessions, both theoretical and practical, carried out in a classroom environment and on archaeological sites. Study visits and some applied work at the selected archaeological sites in Jordan will complement work carried out in the classroom. The course instructors are international experts and regional specialists from the networks of the organizing institutions.

Participants and Admission
The course is intended for 20–25 participants with varied profiles (site managers, conservators, archaeologists, architects, planners, tourism development experts, etc.) from the Arab countries. Their admission to the course will be subject to selection criteria including:

  1. Professional background: at least a BA in a relevant field of study.
  2. Employment: priority is given to government employees or government-affiliated professionals.
  3. Work experience: those who have already gained at least 3 years of practical and research experience in the field will have priority.
  4. Letter of intent: candidates are requested to provide a letter stating clearly the reasons for applying to the course, what they hope to learn from it, and how it will benefit them and their institution, country, or future employer.
  5. Financial resources/support: a request for financial support, or the availability of other sources, should be indicated in the application form. The organizing institutions will provide financial support only upon request (subject to evaluation), to cover accommodation, meals and travel to Jordan during the course.
  6. Insurance: all participants should also have health and accident insurance. Upon selection, they should return to ICCROM a signed medical and accident participant's release.
  7. Working languages: the working languages will be both Arabic and English. Proficiency in English will be required particularly for research work and reading of reference materials.
