AFRICA 2009
Ninth Regional Course on Conservation and Management of Immovable Cultural Heritage (2007)

Dates : 23 July - 12 October 2007

Place : Mombasa, Kenya

Organizers

Background
The AFRICA 2009 programme, launched in 1998, is aimed at improving conditions for the conservation of immovable cultural property in Africa through better integrating it into a sustainable development framework. Since its inception, the programme has successfully implemented activities at both the regional and site levels. The programme is organized with assistance from the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida), The National Heritage Board of Sweden, the Unesco-WHC and the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Norway, Finland, and Italy.

Course aim
The aim of the course is to bring together a group of African heritage professionals to build a greater awareness of the most important issues in the area of conservation planning and management.  The course will derive a deepening of knowledge of the problems and challenges faced in carrying out conservation work in African contexts.

Structure
The duration of the course is 12 weeks.  It is divided into two main areas dealing with policy and practice at the national level, and site planning and management.  A prominent feature of the course will be a hands-on management planning exercise at a site in Mombasa.  Active participation is expected throughout the course.  For the closing week, the National Director in charge of conservation of immovable cultural heritage will be invited to take part in a seminar reviewing the work of the participants and looking at the future implementation of the AFRICA 2009 programme.  Certificates will be awarded to candidates who successfully complete the course.

Participants
Participants must be professionals (managers, architects, planners, archaeologists…) with a university degree and minimum of 3 to 5 years experience, and must either, 1) be in charge of management/conservation of a major site or region within their countries, or 2) have a decision-making role in regard to management of immovable cultural heritage within the central structure of their organizations. Applications from qualified women are encouraged.

Language
The language of the course is English.  A strong working knowledge is required of all participants.
(Note: a French language course is planned for the following year.)
