Management and Monitoring of World Heritage Sites with special reference to China

Background
This course is organized by ICCROM together with CACH on the invitation of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage (SACH) to benefit professionals working at World Heritage properties in China. Chinese authorities also intend to open the course to a limited number of international participants from the Asian region. This course is a follow up to the successful course on “Preventive Conservation-Reducing Risks to Collections” organized and implemented by ICCROM in 2009 on the invitation of SACH. 

The course
The course aims to provide participants with current thinking, trends and approaches to management and monitoring of cultural World Heritage properties. Course contents are currently being developed and will include the following themes:

  1. International context of Conservation – Current trends: Redefining heritage, approaches to conservation.
  2. Planning and Management of Heritage - Review of planning for heritage and management at national/ regional and site levels.
  3. Issues of managing World Heritage properties including protection of their Outstanding Universal Value.
  4. Monitoring and Maintenance
    1. Monitoring at site level
    2. Monitoring requirements under the Convention
      • Reactive monitoring
      • Periodic reporting
      • State of conservation reporting.

Methodology
The course is an intensive programme combining both theory and practice, through lectures, case studies and practical exercises. High level interaction is encouraged in the course with participants playing an important part.

Participants
The course is designed for 22 participants, 14 from China and 8 from the Asia and the Pacific region. They should be professionals who are currently working at World Heritage properties in their respective countries.

Teaching Team
Resource persons will include ICCROM staff and other professionals identified by ICCROM and Chinese authorities.

English

Travel, accomodation and living expenses
Participants will be responsible for their round trip travel costs to and from Shanghai, China. Chinese authorities will provide local transportation, accommodation and meals during the course.

Application
Candidates should complete the application form and send it together with the 500-word summary of their experience in protection of heritage sites and the way in which the course relates to their current or future projects.
