The ICCROM Laboratory functions as a scientific support resource for conservation experts within the framework of ICCROM programme areas by:

  • assisting ICCROM projects and courses;
  • hosting interns for variable periods to conduct individual research on a subject selected by ICCROM;
  • organizing short specialized seminars to encourage discussion among specialists on the latest developments in investigation techniques for the study of heritage materials.

The laboratory offers assistance and advice to other conservation institutions, visiting scientists and interns, and promotes networking among conservation laboratories worldwide. It also responds to numerous requests from individual professionals around the world seeking technical advice/information.

The laboratory is also directly involved in other activities such as the definition of technical standards, collaboration on research projects and technical advisory missions abroad.

The laboratory has specialist facilities for petrographic, porosimetric and salts analysis, accelerated weathering tests, infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), spectrophotometric colour measurement, and microclimatic monitoring. It can also provide other specialized analytical services through its collaborating partners.
