Abstract
Preventative conservation cannot be limited to dealing with factors like the environment, relative humidity, temperature and the type and quantity of lighting but calls all those who come into contact with the Artistic Patrimony into question. The aim of the congress of Vantaa in Finland was to formulate a European strategy for preventative conservation of works of art. The strategy to follow was decided upon by 24 countries which all shared similar ideas on the future of works of art. The five institutes responsible for the congress - ICCROM, Italy; EVTEK Institute of Art and Design, Department of Conservation, Finland; Instituto Portugues de Conservaço e Restauro, Portugal; Centre de Recherches et de Restauration des Musées de France, France; Ministry of Arts, Hungary - coordinated the work of more than 70 representatives. The result of the discussions and work-groups was expressed in five themes and lines of action.
