Final Review Meeting of TIEM

On 19 June, the concluding phase of the eight-month course, 'Teamwork for Integrated Emergency Management' (TIEM), began at the Seoul Museum of History, Republic of Korea.

The course was offered in the framework of MEP (Museums Emergency Programme), which is a joint project of ICOM (International Council of Museums), GCI (Getty Conservation Institute), and ICCROM.

TIEM was developed as a three-phase course spread over an eight-month period of training and capacity building for risk assessment and emergency preparedness in museums.

Phase one (August 2005)
A two-week introductory workshop held in Bangkok, Thailand. Participants were introduced to the theoretical concepts of risk assessment and emergency preparedness. They were also briefed on the overall course structure and programme.

Phase two (September 2005 - March 2006)
Distance-mentoring over a period of seven months. Participants, working in their own institutions, undertook a programme of practical work, determined by themselves and their institutional colleagues, that took them through the processes of museum risk assessment and the basic steps of an emergency plan.

Phase three (June 2006)
Currently taking place. A final review meeting followed by a public seminar. Participants present and assess the work carried out in their institutions during the previous months. Together with the mentors, they are identifying tools and procedures for risk assessment and emergency management that could be used in the future by other museums.

The final review meeting is organized with the generous support of:

  • Museum Section of the Division of Culture Heritage of UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization)
  • ICOM National Committee of Republic of Korea

Member States represented: Australia, Cambodia, Canada, India, Japan, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, United States of America and Viet Nam
