Regional course on archaeological conservation for Southeast Europe, Sirmium, Serbia
28 August – 21 September 2006

A four-week course on archaeological conservation is currently underway at the site of Sirmium, Serbia.  The sixteen participants attending the course include archaeologists, architects, chemists, conservators, and curators in the management and conservation of archaeological heritage. 

The first two weeks of the course have focused on understanding the site and its values, its materials and climate.  The participants have been carrying out the documentation of specific case studies at the site, using various tools and techniques, including hand mapping, photography, and using software such as GIS to integrate the results of some of the exercises

In the final weeks, they will analyze the alteration and decay mechanisms of their case studies, and have an overview of the planning process in conservation, and directly applied to their case studies.

At the end of the course, the participants will present the results of their activities, within a seminar to which Directors of the institutions from which the participants come from have been invited.

The course is organized by ICCROM, the National Museum Belgrade and the Museum of Srem, with a special contribution from the Directorate-General of Cooperation for Development, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Italy.
