ICCROM is pleased to announce that Herb Stovel, former Unit Director of the Heritage Settlements Unit at ICCROM, has been awarded The Medal of the Order for Merits to Lithuania. The medal was awarded by the President of Lithuania for services to the protection and preservation of Lithuanian cultural heritage. Mr. Stovel was involved in conservation in Lithuania first as a consultant for the Canadian Urban Institute and then as a consultant and later staff member for ICCROM within the framework of the Integrated Territorial and Urban Conservation (ITUC) programme. He is currently an Assistant Professor in Canadian Studies at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada.

Mr. Stovel received a certificate of appreciation from the State Commission of Cultural Heritage, the City of Vilnius, and the Department of Cultural Heritage at a ceremony at the Vilnius City Hall on 10 February 2006. He received the Medal of the Order for Merits to Lithuania at a ceremony at the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania to Canada in Ottawa on 16 February 2006, the Day of Restoration of the State of Lithuania.
