International Course on the Conservation of Built Heritage (CBH07)
29 January. ICCROM is pleased to announce that on 1 February the course on Conservation of Built Heritage will begin in Rome. It will include field trips to Herculaneum and Florence. This course marks the return of a regular international course on architectural conservation. In designing this particular course, ICCROM has drawn from decades of experience and has considered the most recent international trends and thinking related to the conservation of built heritage, including buildings, sites, historic cities and cultural landscapes.
This eight-week course will serve a wide range of conservation practitioners and decision makers by placing technical issues within the broader conservation context in order to link them to planning and management concerns. The first part will consist of an overview of the different approaches and key concepts in built heritage conservation. The second part will focus on an integrated approach to conservation and management of heritage andl provide an opportunity for the participants to view conservation concerns within a broader strategic and planning framework, including not only technical but also cultural, environmental and sustainability issues. Part of the course will address the technical aspects of conservation interventions.
The last week of the course will take place at Herculaneum, the well-known Roman archaeological site located along the Bay of Naples. Here the participants, through hands-on field work, will be able to reflect, discuss and compare components of what they have learned.
The course has been organized in association with the Centro internazionale per gli studi di Herculaneum. Twenty three participants of diverse backgrounds (architects, archaeologists, engineers, planners etc.) from twenty two countries will participate in the course. Information regarding this course will be posted online and updated regularly.
