International Course on the Conservation of Built Heritage (CBH07) update

Unit 1: General Overview

15 February. This first unit of the course compared and contrasted views on heritage and conservation from different parts of the world and examined historical developments and key concepts of cultural heritage. Participants discussed the situation in their own country, looking at how heritage is defined.

The round table discussion focused on the different ways in which people view their heritage, and illustrated the cultural basis of conservation efforts. The Euro-centric development of the modern conservation movement and its global influence were highlighted. This led to a discussion about the current relevance of heritage to societies worldwide.
