International Course on the Conservation of Built Heritage (CBH07) update
Unit 2: Planning and Management Context
26 February. This unit presented and compared different planning and management approaches to heritage conservation. It examined applications of strategic thinking and integrated approaches to the management of heritage. The objective was to demonstrate that by focusing on broad objectives, conservation actions are undertaken that give due recognition to the heritage, legal, institutional and cultural contexts.
Unit 2 started with a review of the management systems currently used in various parts of the world followed by lectures and discussions on legal and institutional frameworks. The sessions then continued with overviews and discussions on heritage conservation planning at national and site levels, illustrated with examples from different countries including World Heritage Site management planning. While discussing existing approaches, emphasis was placed on integrated and participatory approaches to heritage management and conservation.
As a case study, participants visited the Parco Regionale dell'Appia Antica in Rome to learn about the management of this immense culturallandscape located within the city.
