International Course on the Conservation of Built Heritage (CBH07) update

Unit 3 - Conservation: information and condition assesment

15 March. The focus of this part of the course has been current conservation processes, principles and practices in different parts of the world. Major topics have been information, condition assessments and conservation practices. The role of information in conservation decision-making was explained and available options discussed for various types of heritage (tangible and intangible elements, cultural and environmental aspects).

Emphasis was placed on methods and products relating to inventory and documentation systems. This was complemented by an overview of management and storage of documentation.

Options for understanding materials, structures and landscapes and their causes of eterioration were highlighted, taking into consideration diverse cultural and environmental factors. The focus was on selected materials, structures and typologies (e.g. buildings, sites, cities, landscapes), including causes of deterioration, and on methods for condition assessment (visual, analytical and scientific tools and techniques including laboratory).
