International Course on Preventive Conservation: Reducing risks to collections in Romania concludes
18 June – 6 July 2007

12 July. During the last week of the course, participants discussed treatment options for reducing risks to collections. Cost-benefit analysis was introduced as a tool to compare different options, taking into account collateral risks. Participants continued their work on the case-study to treat risks they had assessed on the collections of the ASTRA Traditional Folk Civilization Museum. Project planning strategies to implement treatments were also explored.

The final presentation of the case-study, during the last unit 'communicate', concluded the risk management cycle. It allowed participants to present, share and discuss their results with senior management and museum staff.

In addition, participants worked in groups on cultural heritage institutions in a one-day exercise to practice risk-based conservation decision making.

Final sessions of the course included feedback from lecturers on the results of the case-study, participants’ reflections and planning for the future on how to use the risk management approach in their professional realities.

During the closing ceremony certificates were presented to participants by Corneliu Bucur, Director-General of 'National Museum Complex 'ASTRA', Raluca Capota, representative of the Romanian Ministry of Culture and Religious Affairs, and representatives of Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI), the Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage (ICN) and ICCROM.

Member States represented: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Czech Republic, China, Greece, Estonia, France, Hungary, Germany, Iran, Netherlands, Nigeria, Romania and United Kingdom
