SOIMA 2007: Safeguarding Sound and Image Collections
6 – 31 August 2007
27 August. The third week of the SOIMA 2007 course reinforced the principles of digital preservation. Topics covered included a comparison between mass storage systems for digital records and small-scale manual approaches, data reduction and metadata for digital preservation.
Participants also discussed various options and strategies for digital preservation and access of audiovisual records. Strategies for outsourcing and generating greater cooperation were included in the discussions. The second half of the week focused on emergency preparedness and risk management of sound and image collections.
In an emergency response exercise participants were taken through the basic steps of mounting a collection salvaging operation within the critical seventy-two hour period in the event of an emergency.
The week concluded with a study visit to Belo Horizonte, organized with the support of Laboratório de Ciência da Conservação (LACICOR) and Centro de Referência Audiovisual (CRAV). The latter provided a live institutional context for the participants to carry out a risk assessment exercise and assess the institution's sound and image collections.
