Closing of the ATHAR Course in Jordan

31 August. The Second Core Regional course on Conservation of Heritage Sites in the Arab Region was concluded with an official closing ceremony on 12 July 2007 in the presence of His Excellency Mr. Osama Al-Dabbas, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities of Jordan.

At the closing session, course participants presented their recommendations as well as the educational benefits gained during the course, and proposed strategies aimed at the conservation of the site of Amman Citadel. The closing session was held in the presence of His Excellency the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities of Jordan, H.E. Mr Gianfranco Giorgolo, Italian Ambassador in Amman, Ms Anjum Haque, Head of UNESCO-Amman Office, Dr Fawwaz Al Khraysheh, General Director of Antiquities of Jordan, Dr Jukka Jokilehto, former Assistant Director, ICCROM and Zaki Aslan, Programme Manager, ICCROM. The closing session was also attended by several directors and representatives of Arab and foreign
institutions in Jordan.

The course, which took place from 10 June-12 July 200,7 was implemented in partnership with ALECSO (The Arab League Organization for Education, Culture and Science), with the support of the Directorate General of Development Co-operation (DGCS), Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UNESCO-Amman Office in Jordan, and the Ministry of Tourism & Antiquities of Jordan (DoA). Conservation Departments of both Yarmouk University (Irbid, Jordan), and the Lebanese University (Tripoli, Lebanon) also contributed to teaching of the course.

Member States represented: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Tunisia
