SOIMA 2007: Safeguarding Sound and Image Collections
6 – 31 August 2007

4 September. The fourth and final week of the SOIMA 2007 course began with a two-day study visit to Cinemateca Brasileira, in São Paulo.

The visit provided an overview on film restoration, film handling techniques, documentation, cataloguing and programming. Course participants gained a practical understanding of the activities of a large film archive. They toured the different sections of the archive and were shown real-life examples of concepts and topics covered in the SOIMA course.

The second half of the week focused on copyright laws, preservation programmes and policies for sound and image collections, and project management. Finally, participants discussed home projects as part of the follow-up programme and evaluation of the SOIMA 2007 course.

During the official closing ceremony on 31 August, certificates were presented to the participants by Prof Jaime Antunes da Silva, Director of  National Archives of Brazil (AN), in the presence of representatives of ICCROM and Laboratório de Ciência da Conservação (LACICOR)

Member States represented: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Barbados, Brazil, Chile, Georgia, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Philippines, Senegal, United States, Venezuela, Zambia and Zimbabwe
