UNESCO-ICCROM Workshop: Reorganization of collections in storage update
21- 25 January 2008

11 March. A Specialized Workshop for Trainers in Reorganization of Collections in Storage was held at ICCROM in January 2008 within the context of UNESCO-ICCROM collaboration for preventive conservation of endangered collections in developing countries.

During the workshop in Rome, a step-by-step methodology for reorganizing the storage of collections was designed and existing tools identified and revised. The latter included: a self-assessment questionnaire for museum storage; a collection of 315 images/visual aids; a bibliography of print and web resources; and methods and tools for specific and critical stages of the process.

At the conclusion, the participants recognized the value of continuing to refine both methodology and training. Accordingly, a task force was created, mainly from among the participants, to advise on the implementation of a pilot project to test and refine the results of the workshop.

Nine proposals for the pilot project have so far been received, one each from Argentina, India, Iran, Kenya, and Peru, and four from the Philippines. One will be chosen as the UNESCO-ICCROM pilot project and implemented later this year.

Member States represented: Angola, Argentina, Austria, Czech Republic, India, Iran, Kenya, Netherlands, Peru, Philippines, Serbia, Venezuela
