AFRICA 2009: conservation and management of immovable heritage in sub-Saharan Africa

29 July.The last Regional Course on Conservation and Management of Immovable Heritage was launched in Kenya on 17 July 2009. The course was inaugurated by Hon. William Ole Ntimama, EGH, MP, a representative of the Kenyan Minister of National Heritage.
Twenty two participants from the national heritage institutions and universities of nineteen countries will be reflecting on immovable cultural heritage planning and management issues as well as enhancing their knowledge of the challenges of developing conservation activities in Africa.
Training activities will include the development of management plans for Pate Island in the Lamu Archipelago off Northern coast of Kenya, involving stakeholders and the local community. During the last week, a seminar will be organized to review the results of this last course, the achievements of the AFRICA 2009 programme and future possibilities. National heritage directors representing the countries of the participants will be invited to this seminar.
This AFRICA 2009 regional course is organized in collaboration with the Centre for Heritage Development in Africa (CHDA) and the National Museums of Kenya. Funding has been provided by Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA); National Heritage Board, Sweden; UNESCO World Heritage Centre; Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Norway; Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Finland;Directorate General of Development Co-operation (DGCS), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Italy.
Member States represented: Botswana, Cameroon, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Seychelles, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe
