Course on preventive conservation: reducing risks to collections
7 - 25 September 2009

1 October. The final part of this three-week course focused on refining the risk descriptions and magnitudes calculated for the case study at the Sackler Museum in Beijing.

Participants were also introduced to the last part of the risk management cycle, developing and choosing options for reducing risks and designing a treatment plan. This was also an opportunity to discuss the concept of emergency preparedness and its integration into the risk management cycle.

A main highlight of this week programme was the 'do-it-yourself exercise', a one-day exercise which provided participants with an opportunity to practice risk-based decision making. The exercise was held at the Juan Qin Zhai studio, a recently restored small historic house in the Palace Museum. The Juan Qin Zhai restoration project was carried out by the Palace Museum and the World Monument Fund.

The objective of the exercise was to analyze and measure how six risks (light, RH fluctuations, dust, fire, wear and tear, and vandalism) would evolve ifpublic access to the the Juan Qin Zhai studio were increased substantially. The following day, participants justified and argued for their recommendations in a lively role-playing session.

The last section of the course was dedicated to communication skills and tools to share the risk management process and results with different audiences. Participants prepared a 90 minute seminar for the closing
ceremony to practice these communication skills. The seminar included seven presentations on the risk management concept, the course content and didactic methods, the case study and exercises, and course social activities.

Time was also allocated to developing risk management plans in the course participants' home institutions.

The closing ceremony took place at the Chinese Academy for Cultural Heritage (CACH) and was attended by representative of Beijing University and students of the training programmes at CACH. Certificates were presented to participants by Mr Huang Yuan, Deputy Secretary of the department of Personnel, SACH,Mr. Chai Xiaoming, vice President of the CACH, Mr Wang Damin, Chief of the Education and Training Division of the Personnel and Education Department of CACH, and Catherine Antomarchi,
