ATHAR - Conservation of Stone and Earthen Structures: traditional bonding materials in masonry and conservation of damp buildings and sites

23 October. The ATHAR course on Conservation of Stone and Earthen Structures is taking place in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The following themes have been covered during the first two weeks:
- use of traditional building materials;
- historic building and materials technology and analysis;
- analysis and treatment of stone masonry: mortars and plasters.
Three sites were visited to introduce participants to ancient construction techniques; methods of observing materials and associated architectural elements. Another site visit will be to Al-Ain to further study historic building techniques.
Laboratory sessions have taken place at the University of Sharjah on: investigation and analysis of lime, plaster, and soil; as well as salts and moisture analysis.
Course activities have also included public lectures, addressing outreach and awareness issues. They were held at the Islamic Museum in Sharjah and the Ismaili Centre in Dubai, in collaboration of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, The Architectural Heritage Society in the UAE, and ATHAR Partners representing the Government of Sharjah.
Participants include site managers, archaeologists, architects, engineers, and planners from eleven countries: Iraq, Lebanon, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.
Resources persons come from the following countries: France, Iraq, Italy, Pakistan, United Arab Emirates, and United Kingdom.
