SOIMA 2009: Safeguarding Sound and Image Collections

30 November. The first week of SOIMA 2009 concluded on 21 November in New Delhi.

It consisted of discussions on authenticity, significance, management and the use of sound and image collections. The underlying principles of collections management and their long-term preservation were also discussed. Sessions consisted of practical exercises supported by theory, as well as in-depth discussions and presentations.

This first part of the course culminated in a one-day conference where participants gave presentations on current challenges and strategies for the long-term preservation of sound and image collections. Many of the issues that audiovisual professionals must face were highlighted and talked about at length, as were problem-solving strategies.

The second week took place in Pune, and mainly dealt with the preservation of films and photographs. This course module was held at the historic Fergusson College Pune and the National Film Archive of India. During this week participants were introduced to photographic processes and received insights into the deterioration, care and handling of films and photographs as well as their safe storage. Practical sessions included the making of a photograph, film repair and preventive conservation measures.
