11 February. During his mission to the United States, from 29 January - 4 February, the Director-General, was invited to the State Department and met with officials from the Cultural Heritage Division. He was received by Gerry Anderson, US Department of State Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Organization Affairs; and Jefferson Brown, Responsible for UNESCO.

He visited the Library of Congress, gave a presentation on ICCROM to the Department of Law, and was given a tour of the Department of Conservation.

At the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, the Director-General participated in the Advisory Council Meeting. Present were: Kurt Dewhurst, chair, Ph.D., Director, Michigan State University Museum; Tony Gittens, Ph.D., Director, DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities; Mickey Hart, musician, author; Debora Kodish, Ph.D., Director, Philadelphia Folklore Project; Ellen McCulloch-Lovell, President, Marlboro College; Libby O'Connell, Ph.D., Historian-in-residence, The History Channel; J. Scott Raecker, vice-chair, Member of Iowa Legislature and  Executive Director, Drake University Institute for Character Development; Bob Santelli, Ph.D., Executive Director, GRAMMY Museum; Cathy Sulzberger, foundation board member, real estate developer; Michael Asch, ex officio; Chair, Folkways Advisory Board; G. Wayne Clough, ex officio; Secretary, Smithsonian Institution; Richard Kennedy, ex officio; Acting Director, Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage; Richard Kurin, ex officio; Acting Under Secretary for History, Art, and Culture, Smithsonian Institution.

He also met Gustavo Araoz, President of ICOMOS International and John Fowler, President of U.S. ICOMOS.

At the UN Foundation, the Director-General visited the President, Tim Wirth and at the U.S. House of Representations, he met David Killian, Senior Professional Staff Member for the Committee of Foreign Affairs.

13 January. On 13 January, the Director-General and Engineer Giuma Salem Gieniv, Head of the Board of the Management of Historic Towns and Buildings, Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, signed an MOU. Present were Mr Azedine Beschaouch, former Director General of the Institut National du Patrimoine of Tunisia; Mr K. Abdel Hady, archaeologist; and Zaki Aslan, Programme Manager, ATHAR Programme, Sites Unit.
