Siem Reap, Cambodia
13 January. From 10 – 17 December, the Director-General traveled to Cambodia to visit restoration projects in the Angkor area and report his findings at the 16th Plenary Session of the International Coordination Committee for the Safeguarding and the Development of the Historic Site of Angkor (ICC-Angkor).
The technical visits to the various sites were led by an ad hoc group of experts that included Giorgio Croci, Pierre André Lablaude and Ken Hidak. Among the places visited was the famous complex of Banteay Chhmar. There, a restoration project is taking place under the direction of Architect John Sanday and funded by the Global Heritage Fund.
At the ICC meeting, the reports of the ad hoc experts were presented and discussed. In addition, Gaël de Guichen, Advisor to the Director-General of ICCROM and Simon Warrack, ICCROM consultant, gave a presentation on the training course organized by the National Museum of Phnom Penh and ICCROM.
During his stay, the Director-General also met with H.E. Sok An, Deputy Prime Minister of Cambodia and Minister of Tourism, H.E. Thong Khon, and held meetings with several ambassadors and heritage experts present at the ICC.
