In the aftermath of the L'Aquila earthquake

23 September. The Director-General, Mounir Bouchenaki, participated in a conference on the future of the city of L´Aquila and its surrounding territories hit by an earthquake on 6 April 2009. Gamini Wijesuriya, Sites Unit Projet Manager and Maria Teresa Jaquinta, Liaison Officer (Co-operation with Italy) also attended the meeting.

The conference fostered reflection and debate on future actions to preserve the heritage of the region and enhance historical values.

The event was promoted by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, in collaboration with the Polytechnic of Torino, and ICCROM, with the financial support of the Cassa di Risparmio of L´Aquila Province and the Consorzio Federico II.

Two major axes of development were identified:

  1. the need for strategic plannning for rehabilitation and reconstruction; 
  2. universities as a scientific and research resource for the recovery of the region.

ICCROM's contribution to the debate involved reflections on:

  1. developing sustainable networks;
  2. promoting training and capacity building;
  3. raising awareness for the reconstruction of the region.
