On 16 February, the Director-General and Aparna Tandon, Project Specialist, were invited to participate in the preparatory meeting for the establishment of an International Coordination Committee (ICC) for Haitian culture at UNESCO.

Also present included representatives from: Interpol, Blue Shield, the World Customs Organization, the International Council of Museums (ICOM), International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), as well as the Haitian authorities involved in preparing and implementing a rehabilitation programme for all forms of cultural heritage in the country.

On 8 - 10 February, the Director-General and Valerie Magar, Conservation Specialist, undertook a mission to Madrid and Seville, to meet with conservation agencies and seek support for the LATAM programme in the mid and long-term. They were accompanied by Mrs
Marián del Egido, ICCROM Council Member.

They met with officials from the following institutions :

  • Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo (AECID): Mrs Amparo Gómez-Pallete, in charge of heritage, Mrs Ana Muñoz and Mrs Araceli Sánchez.
  • Ministry of Culture: Mr Alfonso Muñoz Cosme, Subdirector General, Instituto del Patrimonio Cultural de España (IPCE), and Mrs Angeles Albert, Directora General de Bellas Artes y Bienes Culturales.
  • Centro de Conservación: Junta de Castilla y León: Mrs Milagros Burón (Directora, Centro de Conservación y Restauración de Bienes Culturales de la Junta de Castilla y León) and Mr José Javier Fernández Moreno, Jefe de Sección de Inspección, Madrid.
  • Instituto Andaluz del Patrimonio Histórico (IAPH): Mr Roman Fernández-Baca Casares, Director and Mr Héctor Sáenz de Lacuesta Sáez de Ocáriz, Cooperación, Dirección de Estrategia y Comunicación.
  • Fundación Marcelino Botín: Mr José María Ballester, in charge of rural development; Mr Pedro Ponce de León, former ICCROM ARC84 participant, and Mrs Elisa Herranz de Contreras.

On 1 - 4 February the Director-General was invited by the Algerian Ministry of Culture to participate in meetings marking the end of the Second Cycle of Periodic Reporting for World Heritage in the Arab States.

Also in attendance were Jukka Jokilehto, Advisor to the Director-General of ICCROM, Joe King, Unit Director, Sites Unit, and Zaki Aslan, ATHAR Programme Manager.

During the meetings, the Director-General along with Mr Francesco Bandarin, Director, UNESCO World Heritage Centre, met with Mr Bouteflika Mourad, Direction de la Conservation et de la Restauration du Patrimoine Culturel; Mr Abdelouahab Zekagh, Director-General of l'Office national de gestion et d'exploitation des biens culturels protégés (OGEBC); and H.E. Ms Khalida Toumi, Minister of Culture; in addition to several other Algerian cultural professionals. Various sites and museums were also visited, including the World Heritage site of Tipasa.
