Publication: student theses on approaches to conservation science

25 October. ICCROM would like to commend the publication of the volume, An Approach to ‘Konservierungswissenschaft’: Projects Realized at the Graduate Programme, Conservation of Art on Paper, Archive and Library Materials, State Academy of Art and Design Stuttgart 2000-2008.

This book presents 39 richly-illustrated student projects and includes an insightful introduction by the editor, long-time director of the graduate programme and collaborator of ICCROM, Dr Gerhard Banik.

Banik’s introductory article, “'Konservierungwissenschaft' and graduate training of conservators: an approach” (in German and English), outlines the way in which scientific methodology has been woven into the practice of the study programme. It traces the impact that this approach has had on the professional identity of its graduates and developments in this area of conservation. Involvement in research projects early in the career of a conservator is a sound way of bridging the gap between scientists and conservators, building research initiatives both relevant and useful to the challenges that heritage conservation faces. The publication also draws attention to the potential that student theses have in enhancing the body of knowledge in conservation science. Rarely are the results of dedicated student work published, and often they only reach a very limited circle of colleagues.

As an international organization, ICCROM firmly believes in the importance of global dialogue, the pooling of ideas, and career building for students in conservation. We therefore promote participation of students in the international professional community. This publication, which includes texts in English, encourages colleagues to extend beyond linguistic barriers and explore new developments in conservation science.

Here we present the introductory article by Dr Banik and the publication's table of contents. The full publication can be purchased online on the Anton Siegl bookshop.
