Training Workshop on Disaster Risk Preparedness and Management
Berat, Albania, 19 - 24 November 2011

5 December. A training workshop on Disaster Risk Preparedness and Management was held from 19-24 November 2011 at the World Heritage site of Berat, Albania.

Objectives of the workshop were to

  • raise awareness among professionals and responsible agencies for the need to develop appropriate disaster risk management plans;
  • raise capacity in developing appropriate regimes of risk management in major cultural sites of Albania;
  • lay the groundwork for the development of a disaster risk management plan in selected cultural sites, which can act as a model for other sites in Albania and within the region.

The workshop was organized by ICCROM together with the UNESCO Office in Venice, and the Ministry of Tourism, Cultural Affairs, Youth and Sports of Albania, within the framework of One UN in Albania.

Twelve participants from World Heritage sites of Butrint, Berat, and Gjirokastra, together with representatives from relevant agencies participated in the workshop. Resource persons came form ICCROM, UNESCO, Albania, India, Italy, and the United States. Under the guidance of these resource persons, participants established frameworks for the development of disaster risk management plans for their respective sites.
