On 28 March the Director-General of ICCROM, Mounir Bouchenaki visited Sharjah, UAE, to attend the opening of the fourth ATHAR workshop, “Making ATHARnet Effective, Making Conservation Relevant”, held from 28 to 30 March 2011 and hosted by the Sharjah Museums Department.

During his mission he also signed an agreement with H.H. Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Sharjah, to establish a regional training and development centre in Sharjah.

Mr Bouchenaki also received a plaque in recognition for his collaboration with Academic institutions in the Arab Region.

On 23 March the Director-General of ICCROM, Mounir Bouchenaki visited Athens to participate in the presentation of a booklet. The work entitled, the Land of Two Suns, was prepared by Ms Elena Korka, ICCROM Council Member, on the conservation of cultural heritage and its environment.

Other participants of the presentation included:

  • Mr George Anastasopoulos, former Ambassador of Greece to UNESCO and former President of the General Assembly of UNESCO
  • Ms Marianna V. Vardinoyannis, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador

The Director-General of ICCROM, Mounir Bouchenaki, participated as Honorary President of the Sixth International Monaco and the Mediterranean Symposium (RIMM) from 17–19 March. 

The event, which focused on Mediterranean Maritime Heritage, took place under the patronage of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco and other partners including UNESCO, ICCROM, ICOM, and the Oceanography Museum of Monaco.

The Director-General gave an opening address, as well as a speech on, 'ICCROM's links and partners: effective and concrete cultural action'. 

Participants of the event included: Mr André Azoulay, Senior Adviser to King Mohammed VI of Morocco and President of the Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for the Dialogue Between Cultures; Mr Francesco Bandarin, Assistant-Director General for Culture, UNESCO; and Ms Elisabeth Breaud, Director and President of the RIMM Symposium.

From 11-16 March, the Director-General returned to Paris to participate in a seminar organized by UNESCO to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the 'Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property' (15-16 March). On 15 March, Mr Bouchenaki also took part in an emergency meeting of expert groups and individuals, held at UNESCO to address the safeguarding of cultural heritage in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.

On 11 March, the Director-General participated in the jury of the 'Simone and Cino del Duca Prize in archaeology' at the Institut de France.

From 2-4 March, the Director-General, Mounir Bouchenaki, visited UNESCO to participate in the International Forum, 'Towards Cultural Rapprochement and Tolerance'. This event was organized to commemorate the 10 year anniversary of the destruction of the giant Buddha statues in the Bamiyan Valley, Afghanistan.

During his mission he also attended a technical seminar on the safeguarding of the Cultural Landscape and Archaeological Remains of Bamiyan Valley.
