28 July. It is with great sorrow that ICCROM announces the passing of architect and professor, Mario Manieri Elia on 26 July 2011. A long-time friend and colleague, Manieri Elia taught History of Architecture and was director of the International Master Course in Architecture/History and Design at the Università degli Studi Roma Tre, Italy.

A member of the National Council for Cultural Heritage, he was also member of several national commissions for restoration in Rome and advisor to the recent Urban Master Plan of the city. He was a founding member and the former president of the Associazione per il Recupero del Costruito (ARCo), as well as a Member of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome. Manieri Elia's numerous publications cover many aspects of the philosophy, theory, and practice of the conservation of historic buildings and urban areas.

The Director-General and the staff of ICCROM would like to extend their condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
