International Course on Conservation of Built Heritage (CBH 12)

9 March. ICCROM is pleased to announce the commencement of the fourth Course on Conservation of Built Heritage on 2 March 2012 in Rome.
This eight-week course intends to provide a broad understanding of both the technical and managerial aspects of conserving built heritage. This will be done by exploring the topic over seven modules:
- Issues in heritage conservation (general overview): analyzing definitions of heritage and conceptual issues related to conservation;
- Management and planning context: discussing management systems, planning for heritage management and sustainability;
- Information and documentation: exploring principles, methods, and tools of documentation and information management;
- Approaches to condition assessments: providing methodological tools for assessing conditions by examining both causes and effects;
- Condition assessments, treatments, and interventions (part 1): examining the effects of water and humidity on heritage, treatments and interventions, structural issues, and examining surfaces;
- Condition assessments, treatments, and interventions (part 2): interventions on buildings and sites, authenticity and integrity, and issues of maintenance;
- Public Access: looking at issues of interpretation, presentation, education, and visitor management.
In collaboration with the UNESCO World Heritage Centre (WHC) and the Herculaneum Conservation Project (HCP), the last week of the course will be dedicated to a special module on World Heritage and sustainable development. Here, participants will have the opportunity to observe and discuss issues of sustainable development first-hand using the archaeological site of Herculaneum as a case study.
Twenty-two participants of diverse backgrounds (architects, archaeologists, engineers, planners etc.) representing 22 countries will participate in the course. In addition, 40 professionals from all over the world will bring their experience and skills as resource persons to the course. Site visits will include excursions in Rome and surrounding area, as well as Florence and Herculaneum.
