4 Avril. In March the Director General met with Member State Ambassadors, including H.E. Rouben Karapetian, Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia. The Director General also had the opportunity to meet with representatives of several ICCROM partner institutions, including the President of the Secco Suardo Foundation, Lanfranco Secco Suardo; Prof. Sebastian Maffettone, Dean of the Faculty of Political Science at Luiss University; and President of the ECCO network, Monica Martelli.
At the same time, meetings were held with representatives of the Getty Foundation, Joan Weinstein, and the Getty Conservation Institute, Jeanne Marie Teutonico, Tim Whalen and Kathleen Gaines. ICCROM maintains a strong partnership with these institutions.
In Florence, the Director-General participated in the inauguration of the conference "Cupolas of the World" with the Foundation R. Del Bianco - Life Beyond Tourism, and discussed developments in this already-established partnership.
Both at ICCROM and in other locations, the Director-General of ICCROM took part in meetings and conferences related to the ICCROM programme. Some examples include the brainstorming meeting for the Forum on Cultural Heritage and Science in Conservation, which was attended by various ICCROM Council Members, as well as his speech to the Built Heritage course on the Italian system for cultural heritage protection.
Of particular importance were activities related to the ATHAR Programme. The Director-General undertook a mission to Sharjah, where he met with authorities in the Emirate, including those responsible for culture. These included the Council Delegate, and above all, Emir Sheikh Dr. Sultān III bin Muhammad Al Qāsimī, with whom he discussed the setup of the new ICCROM Centre, to be ready by autumn of this year. In addition, the Director-General visited the main archaeological sites along with activities in progress, and discussed future plans for the Sharjah Centre.
Also within the ATHAR Programme, the Director-General visited the Sultanate of Oman, where he viewed the major museums and cultural sites of Muscat. These included the Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Archaeology, for which ICCROM gave advice on the criteria to be used for preparing the collections. The Director-General also met with the Secretary-General for cultural heritage in Oman.
Other contacts permitted exploring possibilities for new collaborations. In particular, the Director-General visited Enna to attend the inauguration of the new academic year at the University of Kore. There, he lectured on the subject of restitution and promotion of cultural heritage, and discussed a potential partnership.
On his mission in Ravello, the Director-General attended the meeting of the ICOMOS Italian Scientific Committee for Historic Towns, where he gave a talk on historic centres and development.
Of particular relevance was his mission to Yale University, in the United States of America. The Director-General had the opportunity to visit the premises of the West Campus Laboratory on Yale's West Campus, the new home of the Yale Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage.
This participation was intended to contribute to a development proposed by Yale University, that of a new training institute for global cultural heritage, which could ideally be an ICCROM partner on specific projects.
The Director-General was invited by Prof. Luigi Campanella to attend a meeting on waste management aspects in World Heritage cities, held at La Sapienza University.
Collaboration has also moved forward with Mounir Bouchenaki, whom the Director-General has appointed to represent ICCROM on various missions abroad.
