RE-ORG in action
22 March. From the 15 to the 26 April, ICCROM in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), India, are organizing a two-week workshop in Delhi in order to re-organize the documentation system of the Janapada Sampada ethnographic collection of the Centre.
Fifteen young Indian professionals are involved in the workshop and are creating a complete documentation system including: the accession book, the main index, a location system, a movement book, two secondary indexes, and individual files. This documentation system will allow the Centre to actively use its collections for the benefit of researchers, visitors and school children.
During the opening ceremony, Mrs. Dipali Khanna, Member Secretary, expressed her deep thanks to ICCROM and to the National Museum of Catalunya, a partner in the RE-ORG programme, for their support. Following this workshop, it is hoped that participants can share their knowledge with colleagues from other institutions in India where there is a need to re-organize the collections documentation system.
This project is a follow-up to the resolution voted at the 27th General Assembly of ICCROM in November 2011 which stated:
‘’The General Assembly approved the following resolution regarding museum storage:
Noting that there is a worldwide problem of conservation and access in museum storage, as demonstrated by the recent survey conducted by ICCROM and UNESCO which offers quantifiable information on the extent of the problem and on its universal aspect for museums everywhere, both in developed and developing countries;
Noting that all ICCROM Member States (and non-Member States) are affected;
Noting that ICCROM in partnership with UNESCO has developed in the last two years an innovative tool published on-line in three languages (English, French, and Spanish)
Noting that a programme on documentation and storage reorganization is included in the 2012-2013 Programme and Budget, but is not financed by the regular budget;
The General Assembly of ICCROM Member States gathered in Rome from 14 to 16 November 2011;
Encourages ICCROM to present in a timely manner a long-term programme for capacity building in storage reorganization based on the above-mentioned material, and to communicate it to Member States, and;
Encourages all countries, foundations, universities, specialized agencies, and international agencies to join forces with ICCROM to offer technical and financial support to develop the above-mentioned programme.’’
