1 February. While the extent of the overall damage has not yet been assessed, it is clear that a number of buildings, tombs, and ancient manuscripts have been damaged or destroyed by rebels at the World Heritage properties of Timbuktu and the Tomb of Askia in Gao. ICCROM, together with our international partners, stands ready to assist national institutions in Mali entrusted with conserving heritage.

ICCROM furthermore congratulates and applauds the actions of individuals who, according to the latest reports, have worked carefully and tirelessly to evacuate and safeguard the great majority of Timbuktu’s beautiful 13th century Islamic manuscripts, and otherwise care for the rich cultural heritage of the country.
