Himalayan earthquake
29 September.
On 18 September an earthquake struck the Himalayan region, killing over 100 people and causing extensive damage to properties. In the wake of this event, ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Risk Preparedness (ICORP) is gathering information on damage to cultural heritage and disseminating updates on its Facebook page. In addition, the Division for Conservation of Heritage Sites, Department of Culture of Bhutan has prepared two short reports on damage to cultural properties in the country. |

New fellow at ICCROM
26 September. Ms Mònica López Prat from Spain has joined ICCROM as a fellow until the end of October. She will be carrying out research on the conservation and restoration of ancient mud plaster sculptures in Uzbekistan. |

Discovery of a gilded bronze pinnacle at the temple of Banteay Chhmar, Cambodia
6 September. The Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts of Cambodia is pleased to announce the discovery of a gilded bronze pinnacle recently found buried at the base of one of the Face Towers of the temple of Banteay Chhmar. The Banteay Chhmar temple complex is one of the most important archaeological sites from the Angkor period and is considered a national treasure. Efforts are currently being made by the Cambodian government to include it on the UNESCO World Heritage List. |

Former Director-General of ICCROM to have amphitheatre named in his honour
1 September. On 14 September a ceremony will be held to dedicate the Amphitheatre of the Auditorium al Duomo in Florence, Italy, to the late Andrzej Tomaszewski. Prof Tomaszewski was Director-General of ICCROM from 1988 to 1992. The ceremony, organized by the Fondazione Romualdo Del Bianco®, Life Beyond Tourism®, Auditorium al Duomo, and partners, will be a celebration of the work and achievements of Tomaszewski in the field of conservation and cultural dialogue. The Director-General, Mounir Bouchenaki will attend on behalf of ICCROM. |
