Destruction of cultural heritage in Mali
5 July. ICCROM deplores the continued demolition of the ancient monuments of Timbuktu. The deliberate destruction of such priceless cultural heritage is a callous attack against the common legacy of humankind. This, however, only strengthens our resolve to not let cultural heritage become a weapon for dividing communities and to use the protection of cultural heritage to promote tolerance and peace in fragile situations. ICCROM will do everything possible to help UNESCO and its partner organizations in providing technical assistance for recovering damaged heritage as well as training for conservation professionals from the area.
