Sharing conservation

Sharing conservation decisions course: evaluation
Since 2002, one of ICCROM flagship activity in Rome is the international course on ‘Sharing conservation decisions’. The course benefits from a strong partnership with the Institut national du patrimoine, France, and with Italian institutions (Istituto Superiore di Conservazione e Restauro, Opificio delle Pietre Dure, Centro di Conservazione e Restauro Venaria Reale).

The 4-week course addresses the processes involved in decision-making in conservation, and is unique in engaging professionals from a wide background of institutional contexts (both built and movable heritage), and a variety of disciplines. Important issues include the notion of cultural project and the role of the cultural heritage values in conservation decisions, the review of conservation principles and approaches, the impact of legislation framework and of government and private funding programmes, the challenges and assets of an interdisciplinary approach and the need to bridge conservation with the communities. The course has been offered four times already, every other year.

Objective for 2010–2011

Evaluate the past courses (content, structure, audience, teaching team, pedagogy, etc.) and their impact.

Activity for 2010–2011

Sharing conservation decisions international symposium
The course evaluation will take the form of a symposium, with call for contributions sent to all participants and teachers of the course 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008. A scientific committee will be established. The symposium programme will include presentations and discussions in relation to the course issues (see above), as well as evaluation of past courses and proposals for future development. The results will be compiled in an e-publication.
