International Course on the Conservation of Modern Architecture (MARC 2011)
28 May – 23 June 2011
ICCROM collaborated on the fourth
International Course on the Conservation
of Modern Architecture held in Finland by
facilitating the application process, selecting
participants, and providing a member of staff
as a resource person.
The main theme of
the four-week course was Metamorphosis:
understanding and managing change.
The objective was to develop a theoretical
basis and methodology for dealing with
both technical and philosophical aspects
of modern architecture: the identification of
qualities and values of modern architecture,
the application of current conservation
principles, and conservation documentation.
Twenty three participants with backgrounds
in architecture, archaeology, research,
project management, and art history
attended the course.
The course consisted of lectures, seminars,
and case studies carried out at various
important Finnish heritage sites including
the Helsinki Olympic Stadium, the
Suomenlinna World Heritage site, and the
Seinäjoki City Complex. Participants also
took part in a study tour to see buildings
designed by the famous Finnish architect,
Alvar Aalto, including the Paimio Sanatorium,
the Villa Mairea, Jyväskylä University, and
the Säynätsalo Town Hall.
