Field projects

The field projects are run biannually and typically last four to six weeks. Like the international courses they are training activities and include modules on teamwork, communication and risk preparedness. However in the case of field projects participants are requested to make practical improvements in a given collection. This requires them to take an integrated approach to the collection being studied, with emphasis on crucial issues such as documentation, budgeting, planning, handling and transportation.

The first CollAsia 2010 field project was held in Hanoi, Vietnam, in collaboration with the Department of Cultural Heritage of Vietnam. The main operational partners were the National Museum of Vietnamese History and the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology.

In the 2008–9 Biennium one field project will be organized in Cambodia in collaboration with APSARA and the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, with the depot of the Conservation d’Angkor as a possible venue. The Conservation d’Angkor hosts mixed organic and inorganic collections relocated from the Angkor temples in the beginning of the century. The field project will focus on improving the conservation and display of these invaluable collections. The project will also work towards improving facilities dedicated to conservation within the Conservation d’Angkor. The field project will include a new one-week module dedicated to enhancing communication and didactic skills.
