Participants
The 17 participants came from national institutions responsible for Heritage or from universities in the following 16 countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Comoros, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Madagascar, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal and Chad.
Aim
The main aim of the course is to familiarise the participants with the process of drawing up proposals for registering cultural property on the World Heritage List.
Course contents
The four-week course comprised three parts: an introductory part; practical exercises and discussions on the registration process; and planning the work of drafting registration proposals. Registration proposals currently being drawn up in the 16 countries where used as supporting materials for the practical exercises.
Main achievements
By the end of the course the participants had acquired skills and know-how regarding the process of drafting proposals for registering cultural property on the World Heritage List, and in particular:
- an understanding of the fundamentals of the World Heritage Convention and Guidelines for implementing it, and the role of the various players in the registration process;
- an ability to coordinate the main stages in the registration process, and a mastery of the format rationale and the substance of the registration proposals;
- an ability to identify the weaknesses of their proposals currently being drawn up and to plan actions to make up for the shortcomings and finalise the proposals.
