Organized by the Iperion CH French node, the 2nd Iperion CH Doctoral Summer School (FID2S) will provide advanced lectures focused on research activities dedicated to the development of innovative instruments and diagnostic strategies to enhance both scientific investigation and conservation strategies of cultural heritage materials.

The lectures will be an opportunity to share information with international experts in the field of Heritage Science about recent advances regarding analysis performed with new portable techniques, large-scale facilities like neutron and synchrotron facilities or ion accelerators and the development of conservation protocols for museum collections or historical monuments.

The lectures are designed to offer the most in a very concentrated form by providing participants the opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas with scientific researchers and professional staff in the field of cultural heritage. It is also a valuable opportunity to network with participantsfrom other countries and institutions

The Doctoral Summer School is organized by the Centre de Recherche et de Restauration des Musées de France (C2RMF), an institution of the French Ministry for Culture devoted to the analysis and conservation of the cultural heritage of the French Museums, in collaboration with other research units belonging to the IPERION-CH French Node via the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) partner.

This three-day intensive workshop is designed to provide both emerging and established conservation professionals with the theoretical and practical foundation for understanding Asian papers and their applications in paper conservation. The workshop consists primarily of hands-on activities with a lecture, group discussions and examinations of various Asian papers.
Participants will familiarize themselves with history and characteristics of Chinese, Korean and Japanese papermaking, including an overview of contemporary Asian paper production. Each participant will be presented with a set of different paper samples and will study the papers first hand and examine the fibers, sheet formation, alkali content and the results of different manufacturing processes and drying methods. Different Asian paper fibers will be compared with the help of microscopic images.
In a practical session, participants will make small-sized paper samples using simple tools with paper mulberry fibers and formation aid. They will also use cotton fibers as a comparison. Participants will make modern equivalent of drying board (karibari) using a honeycomb board and mulberry paper.
Participants will study and share details of various methods of repair and lining techniques using different Asian papers, depending on their opaqueness, texture, and strength, appropriate for specific objects. For example, participants will try double-sided lining with thin mulberry tissue, drying a lined object on a drying board, and making re-moistenable tissue with different adhesives. Useful tips in toning techniques with acrylic paints for mulberry paper will be discussed.

Today, preventive conservation has become a leading theme in all fields of cultural property. Useful scientific and technical knowledge continues to grow but is often incorporated in current practice slowly, incorrectly, or not at all. Despite the best intentions, professionals and institutions dealing with the preservation of cultural property may apply unrealistic standards, guidelines or lists of best practices, with no clear sense of priority, or of realistic expected benefits. The Chair of Cultural Management of BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg is delighted to announce the call for expressions of interest to participate in the World Heritage International Summer School 2017 (WHISS 2017). The Summer School is a multi-university partnership with an interdisciplinary and interfaculty approach created as a platform for professional capacity-building and knowledge transfer for post-graduate academics and mid-career professionals.
The World Heritage International Summer School 2017 (WHISS 2017) is dedicated to Heritage Impact Assessments (HIA) and identifying negative and positive impacts of development plans and projects on heritage sites.
The Summer School will take place from July 16th to July 26th 2017 at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg with a two-days practical group exercise in Berlin at the Tempelhof Field. During this exercise participants will be actively engaged in assessing impacts of potential development plans that could be proposed for this specific site in the future.

Description
This course introduces the 19th and 20th C. photographic images that are produced directly or indirectly by different methods or processes on various paper supports. These images are varied in color, tone, and uses in the periods they were in favor. First sized according to film or printing apparatus used to make & contact print the image, this changed with the evolution of cameras to portable, hand-held boxes & lenses.

The course will help participants to identify items in their collections by using the characteristics, aging properties, and the clues found in the photographs. When introduced to the photographs, participants will learn their unique properties & how they age. Discussions and images shared in the lessons, assignments and forums, will help build confidence in identification skills. After completion of this course, participants should be able to make better decisions concerning storage materials & proper environments.

Description
ScienceRetreats and HERCULES, at the University of Evora, are jointly organizing the 1st edition of the course Tools for Art and Conservation Science. Photography and optical microscopy are among the oldest available tools for conservation science in the laboratory, but for in situ research the use of costly, complex and sometimes bulky equipments can still present some practical restrictions. This lead us to focus the 1st edition of this course on teaching resourceful techniques for Heritage conservation. Our target audience includes historians, architects, art technicians and lovers of wall paintings in general. In situ paintings from the XVII and XIX centuries will serve as case studies.

Work in 2017 will focus on two areas – documentation within Kumayri Cultural Museum-Preserve and creation of informational packets on individual buildings for distribution to potential investors. Once new investors become involved, new jobs will follow, addressing Gyumri’s greatest need. The city of Gyumri has one of the highest unemployment rates in Armenia and desperately needs the jobs restoration and heritage tourism will bring.

Documentation will consist of taking measurements and photographs, making architectural drawings, and collecting written and verbal data. The collected data will be used to find the most efficient solutions for restoration of specific buildings within the historic district. This information will be carefully packaged to guide potential funders and investors in bringing renwed life to the district, and the town.
