International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property

Employer: National Library of Scotland
Job location: Edinburgh

We are seeking two roles, a Project Conservator and an Assistant Project Conservator, to join our Collections Care team to deliver a concentrated programme of newspaper conservation ahead of a larger project of digitisation. Securing the future of the nation's fragile historic Scottish newspaper collections is the National Library's most urgent conservation goal. Regional and local newspapers chronicle the history of Scotland's places and their residents, and this makes them important national heritage assets. They are some of the most requested collections at the Library and this popularity translates into regular handling and physical deterioration. Being tightly bound into huge volumes puts immense strain on the inherently fragile paper already at high risk of tearing and creasing.

The best approach to preserve and provide wide access to the newspaper collections is to conserve, digitise and make the content freely available online. A 2020 project to establish the scope, methodologies, and costs of this work found that only a partnership project between the National Library and public libraries could deliver the aims of a resource with nation-wide content, because of the incomplete nature of the Library's own early newspaper collections. Therefore the Library is working with partner libraries across Scotland as part of this project.

Applications are encouraged from conservators with a recognised conservation qualification or experience. Applicants should have at least two years of practical experience since qualifying, including experience of treating bound volumes. They should be accredited or working towards accreditation through Icon's ACR scheme.

Both are full time positions, 6 month fixed-term contracts
Salary Project Conservator £33,665 per annum (pro rata); Assistant Project Conservator £30,057 per annum (pro rata)

Interviews will be held in the week commencing 22nd August 2022.
Please note that the successful candidates will be subject to Basic Disclosure Scotland security clearance.
