The Library of Congress Preservation Research and Testing Division (PRTD) (www.loc.gov/preservation/scientists) is seeking Preservation Research Fellows to perform scientific testing on library materials for a project funded by the Mellon Foundation (https://nationalbookcollection.org). The testing will assess the physical, chemical and optical properties of books from different institutions to determine their condition. The fellows will work in the Preservation Research and Testing Division at the Library of Congress undertaking and managing the science portion of the grant in collaboration with the Chief of PRTD – the Project Director.

The Preservation Research Fellows will be asked to undertake required chemical, physical and optical testing on paper-based materials and abide by all safety requirements. Laboratory experience in a chemistry lab including knowledge of handling solvents and chemical safety with a minimum two-three lab courses is requested.

Applicants with a bachelor's or master's degree in a physical science such as chemistry, materials or forensic science are especially encouraged to apply.

Salary range (depending on experience): GS 5 ($40,883), GS 6 ($45,574), GS 7 ($50,643)
