Description

Providing adequate storage has become one of the main challenges of running a museum: often, objects are difficult to locate, space is insufficient, objects are inadequately housed, storage units are not adapted to the needs of the collection and policies and procedures are incomplete. All of these issues can make it difficult for museums to access and use their collection to the benefit of their community.

Come learn about the RE-ORG method for storage reorganization and how it could benefit your institution. The RE-ORG method was developed by ICCROM (International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property) and UNESCO and adapted in collaboration with CCI. At this conference, you will learn from the experience of the four museums participating in the 2017–18 edition of RE-ORG: Canada (West) (CCI’s five-year training program on storage reorganization), from one of the developers of the RE-ORG method and from other colleagues in Canada and abroad.

Background

From September 2017 to November 2018, staff from four small museums in the western region are rolling up their sleeves to reorganize their storage rooms to improve access to their collection and its overall conservation conditions. This collective effort is part of CCI’s RE-ORG: Canada program, organized in collaboration with the Museums Assistance Program. So far, RE-ORG: Canada has been held in Quebec, in the Atlantic region and in Ontario.

During the three days before this conference, the RE-ORG: Canada (West) participants will be working together to reorganize a storage room at the Parksville Museum in British Columbia. At the conference, you will hear about this exciting experience and about the challenges the participants will be tackling in their own museums as they embark on a RE-ORG project of their own. Our guest speakers will also share their experience and lessons learned in storage reorganization or upgrade projects.
