Recanati e Restauro is offering two four-week courses this summer 2021, in Recanati, Marche, Italy.
Introduction to Book Conservation and Historical Bookbinding
May 31th – June 27th
Instructor - Giovanni Pagani, Chiara Argentino, Nicola Pagani
For the duration of this four week course, students will create a facsimile binding in full leather, with wooden board and metal parts, and reused parchment end-leaves, and will engage with the crafting and conservation of leather, parchment, pigments, wood, and metal. The facsimile binding will be based on historical examples present in Benedettucci collection.
Theoretically, the course will focus on book structure terminology, with in-depth practice in the documentation of historic book structures. Students will learn about the 'Conservation versus Restoration' approaches, with a focus on assessment and analysis, to help students understand the challenges a conservator faces in balancing the need for conserving and/or restoring objects of historical value.
Conserving Archives: Conservation of Bound and Unbound Documents
July 5th - July 31st
Instructor - Giovanni Pagani, Konstantinos Choulis
This four-week course is structured into 2 consecutive thematically linked modules - In the first 2 weeks the students will learn the preservation and conservation of bound archival documents. By creating two facsimile bindings, one in leather and one in parchment, students will engage with the crafting and conservation of leather, parchment, and paper.
In the remaining 2 weeks students will learn preservation and conservation of unbound archival documents, focusing their attention on paper conservation and restoration. They will have the opportunity to work on original documents from the Archive of the Benedettucci Library.
