문화유산 보존·복구 분야 국제기구 수장, 유적공원·북성벽 등 답사
"'유적 보존 vs. 개발' 곳곳에 있지만…포기말고 함께 노력해야"

NCAM and the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) are trying to plan steps for preserving culture during the war, including the possible evacuation of artefacts.

"While there is a lot of awareness about cultural heritage and the need to protect it in times of crisis, one of our biggest challenges is that culture is still not mainstreamed into the language of humanitarian aid," said ICCROM's Aparna Tandon.

Sudan’s rich cultural heritage is at risk of irreparable damage from the conflict raging for more than a month now as museums lack adequate protection from looters and vandalism.

Aparna Tandon leads the First Aid to Cultural Heritage in Times of Crisis Programme at Iccrom, the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property. She has worked in countries afflicted by conflict and natural disasters – like Haiti, Nepal, Japan, Italy, and more recently, in the areas of Turkey and Syria hit by the 2023 earthquake.

“ICCROM can help unemployment in youth, and heritage should be seen as essential for their livelihood,” he explained. “We see heritage as something that can provide answers to some issues…provide jobs, provide employment, provide entrepreneurship…The youth has to be a major stakeholder in what we do.”

Several provinces that were hit by the two strongest earthquakes in Türkiye's history are home to many historical buildings. The area includes six UNESCO World Heritage sites.

We talk to Aparna Tandon from Iccrom, the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property, about culture’s significance in the humanitarian response to the crisis.

The three-day regional workshop on “Climate Change and Historic Cities in the MENA Region: Integrating Traditional Knowledge in Climate Change Adaptation and the Sustainable Development of Historic Cities,” in Sharjah, UAE, concluded on 2 February 2023. The workshop was organized by the ICCROM Regional Office for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage in the Arab States (ICCROM-Sharjah) with the generous support of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.

The US Mission in Rome also represents the US’s government and other international organizations, including the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM). As US Ambassador to ICCROM, she also visited Mleiha in Sharjah, an ICCROM site and a UNESCO-nominated world heritage site.
